On September 11, the Northwest Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (NWMMSDC) was proudly partnered with the Port of Seattle in kicking off the 2025 Business Accelerator Program. This initiative highlights our shared commitment to promoting supplier development, increasing opportunities, and strengthening the regional economy.

Following a highly competitive application process, 13 distinguished businesses were selected from a pool of nearly 100, reflecting the program’s rigorous standards and the exceptional qualifications of the participants. These firms collectively represent a range of Port-related industries such as architecture, engineering, construction, and maritime.

The kickoff brought together leaders from key sectors, Port executives, mentors, and strategic community partners. Throughout the event, participants formed professional connections, shared their reasons for applying to the program, and engaged in meaningful conversations with mentors, members of the port, and other members of their cohort.

A key part of the program involved Port officials presenting upcoming projects and procurement opportunities. These updates gave cohort members important insights into government processes, supplier requirements, and long-term infrastructure plans, helping to clarify the strategic goals that participants may be involved in.

The NWMMSDC strongly believes that increasing access for underrepresented businesses connecting with Port executives and elevating their knowledge in contracting is crucial for building an innovative economy. This accelerator program is designed to provide participating women, minority-owned and small businesses with the skills, best practices, and industry knowledge needed to scale their businesses and succeed in public procurement.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ricardo Ibarra of Trio Group for his steadfast marketing support, Fernando Martinez of Sante Fe Street Consulting for his expert guidance as project consultant, and Emily Ho, Program Manager, our main point of contact at the Port of Seattle, along with her team including Mian Rice, Diversity in Contracting Director, Kelvin Dankwa, Community Engagement Professional and Project-Program CoordinatorNeepaporn “A” Boungjaktha, Managing Director Economic Development, and John Wellons, Aviation Chief Development Officer,  for their coordination and leadership throughout this program and during the kick-off. Their collective commitment and collaboration have ensured that this accelerator continues to deliver meaningful opportunities and measurable impact.

Next Steps

In the following months, cohort members will engage in targeted workshops, further develop their knowledge in all aspects of running a business at the executive level and learn how to do business with the Port of Seattle. As cohort members shared their goals for the program, Matthew Aalfs highlighted his excitement for growth and collaboration:

I am open to learning how to grow my business and interested in learning how to work with the Port as well as the infrastructure and public in general. I think this is a great opportunity to learn more business development skills.

His reflection perfectly captures the spirit of the accelerator: a chance to gain knowledge, build connections, and explore new avenues for business development.

The Port of Seattle Business Accelerator Program marks a significant step toward a competitive and diverse contracting environment. Together, we are shaping a future where innovation flourishes, opportunities are more accessible, and the economic landscape reflects our communities.

We look forward to celebrating the success stories that will emerge from this program and to witnessing the lasting contributions this cohort will make to the Port of Seattle, our region, and beyond.
